Early Signs of Arthritis

Joint pain may be common for those who participate in high intensity sports. It can be caused by injury to muscles, tendons, and ligaments. However, continued pain may be a sign that arthritis is developing. Though it is more common for one to get arthritis with age, it is also something that can gradually develop if repeated injuries happen and proper healing does not take place. There are different types of arthritis, and they fall into the two main categories known as inflammatory arthritis and osteoarthritis. Inflammatory arthritis results from a systemic disease where the body’s immune system attacks its own joints and tissues. Rheumatoid arthritis is an example of inflammatory arthritis, and is a symmetrical problem that affects both sides of the body at the same time. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative ailment that comes from wear and tear on joints over time. This is a typical type of arthritis that can affect the big toe. If you are experiencing joint pain in your feet, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist who can properly diagnose whether arthritis is the cause and offer treatment options.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Farah Podiatry Associates. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a term that is commonly used to describe joint pain.  The condition itself can occur to anyone of any age, race, or gender, and there are over 100 types of it.  Nevertheless, arthritis is more commonly found in women compared to men, and it is also more prevalent in those who are overweight. The causes of arthritis vary depending on which type of arthritis you have. Osteoarthritis for example, is often caused by injury, while rheumatoid arthritis is caused by a misdirected immune system.

Symptoms

  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Decreased Range of Motion

Arthritic symptoms range in severity, and they may come and go. Some symptoms stay the same for several years but could potentially get worse with time. Severe cases of arthritis can prevent its sufferers from performing daily activities and make walking difficult.

Risk Factors

  • Occupation – Occupations requiring repetitive knee movements have been linked to osteoarthritis
  • Obesity – Excess weight can contribute to osteoarthritis development
  • Infection – Microbial agents can infect the joints and trigger arthritis
  • Joint Injuries – Damage to joints may lead to osteoarthritis
  • Age – Risk increases with age
  • Gender –Most types are more common in women
  • Genetics – Arthritis can be hereditary

Many Reasons for Foot Pain to Occur

Many people experience foot pain, whether it is chronic or occasional. Foot pain that is felt every day may be a result of specific conditions such as arthritis, hammertoe, or having a bunion. Pain that is felt once in a while may come from wearing shoes that do not fit correctly or standing for long periods of time. Older people may have foot pain from a loss of padding in the feet, which helps to absorb shock. Blisters on the feet may be uncomfortable, and excess friction from the socks or shoes that are worn is generally the cause. Young children and teenagers may suffer from Sever’s disease, which is an inflammation of the muscles surrounding the growth plate in the heel. It affects active people in this age group, and parents may notice their child is limping. There are additional reasons to have foot pain, and it is suggested that a podiatrist be contacted who can pinpoint the exact cause, and offer you correct treatment solutions.

Hammertoe and Flip-Flops

Hammertoe is a particular condition of the foot in which the joints of the toes point upward in a “v” shape at the center of the toe. The toe ultimately has a hammer-like shape. This condition can be caused by many different things. Specifically, wearing flip-flops may contribute to the onset of hammertoe. When an individual wears flip-flops, they must essentially scrunch up their toes to keep the flip-flop on their feet. This is an unnatural and strenuous task for the toes. As a result, the muscles in the toes might experience an imbalance. Hammertoe can result. If you are someone that wears flip-flops frequently, you might be at an increased risk of developing foot conditions such as hammertoe. It is suggested that you reach out to a foot care specialist such as a podiatrist to receive treatment or attention.

Hammertoe

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists from Farah Podiatry Associates. Our doctors will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the affected toes
  • Development of corns or calluses due to friction
  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Contracture of the toes

Causes

Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible

Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur

Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe

Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe

Treatment

Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it

Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used

Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

What Is an Ankle Sprain?

An ankle sprain is an overstretched or torn ligament in the ankle that can happen for various reasons. One may step off a curb unexpectedly or land on the foot in the wrong direction. Common symptoms that many people experience can include immediate swelling and bruising, and it is often difficult to walk. Sometimes a popping sound may be heard if the sprain is severe, and the pain can be debilitating. A diagnosis is needed to determine if the injury is a fracture or a sprain. An X-ray will be taken, followed by beginning the correct treatment. Ankle sprains will heal faster when the foot is elevated and the weight is kept off the affected foot as much as possible. Many people choose to use a walking aid that is generally effective in restoring mobility. If you have ankle pain or fear you may have sprained it, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can confirm this and offer you the correct treatment options

Although ankle sprains are common, they aren’t always minor injuries. If you need your ankle injury looked at, contact one of our podiatrists from Farah Podiatry Associates. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains are the result of a tear in the ligaments within the ankle. These injuries may happen when you make a rapid shifting movement while your foot is planted. A less common way to sprain your ankle is when your ankle rolls inward while your foot turns outward.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Pain at the sight of the tear
  • Bruising/Swelling
  • Ankle area is tender to touch
  • In severe cases, may hear/feel something tear
  • Skin discoloration

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

In many cases, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate) is used to treat ankle sprains. However, you should see a podiatrist to see which treatment option would work best with your injury. In severe cases, surgery may be required.

It is important to ask your doctor about rehab options after you receive treatment for your injury. Stretching, strength training, and balance exercises may help the ankle heal while also preventing further injury.
